Working for yourself

Agency, private practice and your own business

Agency and ABN shifts

Shifts paid to your ABN usually have no tax withheld and may not include super. Set aside tax each fortnight and check whether the agency should be paying your super.

Nurse practitioners and midwives

Since November 2024, nurse practitioners and participating midwives no longer need a formal collaborative arrangement with a doctor to provide Medicare-rebated services. That opens new ways to practise, and new business decisions about billing, rooms and structure.

Cosmetic nursing

Medical services are generally GST-free, but cosmetic procedures that are not medically necessary are usually taxable. Clinics offering injectables need the GST and structure right from the start.

Your future

Planning your super

Part-time years, career breaks and caring roles often leave nurses, especially women, with less super than they’d planned. A few steps can help.

Carry-forward contributions

If your super balance is under $500,000, unused concessional cap amounts from up to five previous years can be used in a higher-income year.

Spouse contributions

A partner’s contribution to your super can attract a tax offset for them and build your balance.
