What hospital doctors often miss

Small things that are easy to miss

Salary packaging, used in full

Public and not-for-profit hospital staff can generally package up to a $17,000 grossed-up cap each FBT year, plus a separate cap for meal entertainment and venue hire. Many doctors leave part of it unused, or lose track when they rotate between health districts.

Two employers, one tax-free threshold

Rotations, secondments and casual shifts often mean several payslips in one year. Claiming the tax-free threshold with more than one employer is a common cause of a tax bill at the end of the year.

Training costs

AHPRA registration, college fees, exam and course costs connected to your current role, indemnity insurance, conferences and professional equipment can generally be claimed when the records are right.

Travel between hospitals

Home-to-work travel is generally private. Travel between workplaces, or to an alternate site during a shift, can be deductible with a logbook or diary.

Locum shifts on an ABN

Locum income usually has no tax withheld. Setting aside tax, and knowing whether super is payable on the engagement, avoids an unpleasant surprise.

HELP debt and first home

Compulsory HELP repayments rise with income. We plan around them, along with saving for a first home and managing cash flow on a training salary.
